Pop Evil would be one of the better known acts in today's Pop/Rock scene. Jazz, like so many other musical styles, has evolved over the years. It originated in the early 20th century when African-American communities based in the south of the US began to combine elements of their traditional Africa-based music with those found in European styles. A few of those original elements that have stood the test of time include poly-rhythms, syncopation and most importantly improvisation. Many followers of jazz agree that improvisation is what sets it apart from so many other genres. Improvisation allows musicians to be spontaneous and delight audiences with unexpected and vibrant performances. As the music spread and became more popular, thanks in part to artists such as Louis Armstrong, new sub-genres developed; including New Orleans jazz, soul jazz, jazz rock and jazz funk. While closely related to jazz and its origins, blues has in itself become a distinctive genre. Blues music tends to be more melancholic and lyrics often describe hardship and times of trouble or woe. Rhythm also plays an important part. Where performers of other genres sing to a varying melody, blues performers sing in 'rhythmic talk', which enhances the melancholic tone of the music. Famous blues singers over the years include Nat 'King' Cole, Jimmy Reed and B.B. King.
